While Samsung’s Galaxy Tab may not be the “iPad killer” Apple’s rivals are seeking, at least it’s off to a promising start. The mini-sized tablet has sold a million units worldwide just two months after its launch.

Apple’s iPad hit the million mark in sales just one month after being released and has gone on to sell nearly ten million units in just eight months. The Samsung Galaxy Tab hasn’t had such an auspicious start, but the 7” tablet has proved popular enough to move a million units worldwide in just two months. Being carried by five US telecoms—AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon—helped boost Samsung’s sales, especially since three of them are offering the Tab for $400 with a two-year contract.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab is the first competitor to present a real challenge to the iPad’s dominance of the tablet field, and its success bodes well for the devices set to come from rival companies over the next few months. But Apple isn’t likely to lose a large portion of its market share anytime soon, especially with the next generation iPad coming in early 2011, rumored to be packing some features lacking in the original version. A newer iPad with dual cameras, FaceTime and a USB port could cut into Samsung’s business, but there’s definitely a market for the Galaxy Tab, since some buyers prefer a smaller tablet and the Android platform.
